FULL DAY GUIDED TRIP: The Best "Local" Water
The Rivers: The Cimarron River, Rio Costilla, Red River, Rio Hondo and The Rio Grande. The Cimarron holds an incredible insect population. The most exciting hatch of the season comes in late May when stream flows have stabilized. The Rio Costilla is another great fly water similar to the Cimarron River in many respects except that it flows through beautiful high alpine meadows and valleys. The Costilla is fed by the Vermejo Reservoir. Cutthroat trout that inhabit these waters range in size from 8”-14”. Tumbling down from Wheeler Peak enroute to the Rio Grande is where you will experience the wild browns and cuttbows of the Red River. The Red River is more suitable for the rugged fly fisher who is seeking solitude and doesn’t mind a great hiking and endurance adventure. The Rio Grande is a very unpredictable fishery. Many of the best fishing opportunities are found by hiking into the canyon. The Hondo flows out of the Taos Ski Valley. Wild browns and rainbows patrol the water.
